MISSION

AQUACULTURE FACES A CHALLENGE
Aquaculture is the fastest growing food industry in the world, offering healthy and sustainable food to millions of people. But this growth presents a challenge. Fish farms generate waste (sludge) that can emit nitrogen and phosphorus (N+P) in harmful quantities and pollute marine environments.
WE CAPTURE AND REUSE AQUACULTURE WASTE
AQUAPHOENIX is developing and demonstrating sludge collection technology: an innovative novel system technology that collects waste from open sea aquaculture pens. This waste is then filtered and stored for conversion into sustainable feed, fertilizer and energy sources.
AQUAPHOENIX is putting this technology into operation across active fish farms in Norway and Finland. The project is also conducting extensive research to increase our knowledge of aquaculture’s environmental impacts and validate the potential of sludge collection technology to lessen emissions and harmful effects. Along with supporting novel policy guidance and governance mechanisms among key European and international actors, these activities will increase clean aquaculture production, reduce emissions and promote healthy seas.
CREATING NEW PATHWAYS
Aquaculture sludge is an untapped asset. AQUAPHOENIX will develop and use novel technologies to collect sludge, before testing and developing sludge as a resource for producing clean assets like energy, fertiliser and novel food and feed ingredients. By applying circular approaches to capture waste and create value, AQUAPHOENIX seeks to transform the European and international aquaculture industry and advance the transition towards zero pollution industry.
ACTION PLAN
The AQUAPHOENIX action plan is organised across seven work packages, in which industry-leading partners work collaboratively to scientifically validate, implement, scale and share clean aquaculture solutions and sustainable uses of sludge.
